In East Anglia in the same year another rebellion was forming, but this for different reasons, not religious based as the Prayer Book Rebellion was the Ket Rebellion was set out to stop the rising taxes and enclosure of land by the gentry. Led by local yeoman, Robert Ket gathered an army of 16,000 and set up camp on Mousehold Health and within a month was able to capture Norwich. The reason for this rebellion most likely lay within the strict organisation that Ket created, with every gentleman apprehended being brought before Ket and his council. However, as neither Lord Russell or John Dudley had the troops or resources to stop the rebellions, it was only when the Privy Council was able to grasp the significance of the rebellions and provide additional troops that Lord Russell and John Dudley were victorious over the rebels in the West country and East Anglia. These rebellions showed Somerset as a man unwilling to take a firm hand to leading the country and therefore the newly victorious Northumberland has no problem in arresting him in 1549. It could be perceived that these rebellions started because of the sense of weakness in the government, with a child monarch, people would see more chance of an easy victory; this did cause some considerable instability in the government with Somerset’s fall in 1549 however Edward was relatively untouched by this and remained well served throughout the transition from Somerset to Northumberland and their respective phase of power. Moving through to Northumberland’s rise to power, he increased the Privy Council to 33 members of whom he held trust, even releasing Somerset’s supporters of ability such as Paget and Cecil to increase his control over the government. As an extra precaution, taking Somerset’s fall into account, a perfectly reasonable one, he chose many men of military experience so he could be sure of immediate armed support in the event of more rebellions. Also in response of the religious rivalry plaguing the kingdom he attempted to change the succession with the support of Edward so that Mary would not take the throne, but rather Lady Jane Grey, a devout Protestant. Even though there were large rebellions against the government, it seems to be just that and not aimed at Edward in a direct attack and so it is hard to argue that he was not well served in this time; as the two Lord Protector’s Somerset and Northumberland took the blame for the problems that England encountered in his reign. His government might not have been the most stable of the Tudor monarchs however it does appear that he ever became unpopular with the people. In the change to Mary there were certainly complications to consider such as the Lady Jane Grey being forced onto the throne by Northumberland and her family and the rivalry between Protestantism and her own Catholicism in the country. However she was greatly received by the public and even though Northumberland did his upmost to secure Jane Grey as queen when she was crowned in July 1553, within nine days she was overthrown by Mary Tudor and sent to the Tower of London, later executed. Mary quickly arranged her Privy Council, however she was forced to use several members of her Royal household and this therefore resulted in a Privy Council too large to function at times reaching 43 and with few people in a position to support her, lacking in any political ability. She soon realised this was a problem and employed several of Northumberland’s supporters into her Council as councillors. Contrary to helping solve the problem, she had no faith in the councillors and even though they did have a vast supply of knowledge, the size of the Privy Council restricted how effective they could be with huge rivalry between the Protestants and the Catholics within the Council. These wo factions were led by Pager and Gardiner, who were able politicians but even though they did help to create a stable government Mary did not seem to have any faith in her Council and avoided collecting them if possible, preferring to confer with Renard, a Spanish ambassador, on decisions of state. However this was a problem in itself as the anti- Spanish feelings were growing stronger in the country with the word of the queen marrying Philip of Spain. This led to start of the Wyatt Rebellion that started in January 1554, led by Sir Thomas Wyatt, who supported her accession, Sir James Croft and Sir Peter Carew. Their plan was never to harm the queen ‘we seek no harm to the Queen, but better counsel and councillors. ’, but to convince her to stop the Spanish marriage as they feared that Philip would take control of England. Three rebellions started in Kent, the Midlands and the West Country causing the Queen to panic as there was also a French fleet blocking the English Channel. The proximity of the uprising made it the most dangerous of the Tudor rebellions, and Wyatt took full advantage of this, by raising an army of 3000 men of his own and then soon after the deserter troops of the Duke of Norfolk’s army. However Mary proved to be well served when appealing to the citizens of London to help defend the city as although Wyatt enjoyed some success, they were eventually trapped and defeated at Ludgate. Mary ignored the rebellions and continued to marry Philip of Spain though his proposed coronation was postponed as the anti-Spanish feelings rose again and he left after just a few months in England. Although her government became increasingly stable throughout her reign compared to the start as factions co-operated better and her council shrunk, her popularity dramatically dropped throughout her reign and her death in 1558 was as well received as her accession five years prior showing she was not well served in the sense of faith in her policies and views shown by the Wyatt Rebellion and continuous faction rivalry which she distanced herself from therefore becoming increasingly out of favour with her people. The crown was peacefully given to Mary’s half sister, Elizabeth, crowned in 1558. She had a powerful Council around her, full of wise and influential men, yet what won her the most respect was her strong yet humble personality, she kept the classes in line and never relinquished her power to her councillors. However this sometimes led to her disagreeing with majorities in the Council such as the Puritans, who never persuaded her to alter religious settlement in 1559 nd her deep suspicion stopped her joining with the Dutch against Spain despite a clear majority in Council. She also kept a strong hold on the government and her Council by refusing to name her successor for fear of men plotting treason against her. Still, her greatest challenge to power was by Mary, Queen of Scots, who after fleeing to England spent twenty years attempting to claim the English throne but the only plot that caused difficulty for Elizabeth was the Northern Rebellion of 1569. Within the first week of November the Earls of Northumberland and Westmorland tried to change the Queen’s policies with their first demonstration holding Mass at Durham Cathedral and they soon moved to Bramham Moor with over 5000 men. Although their clear advantage over Sussex, they turned back to wait for help from Catholic nobles and the Spanish. They were defeated by the end of December, both of the leaders exiled to Scotland and Elizabeth eager for revenge, though many of the proposed 700 executions were commuted. Elizabeth was clearly well served as the rebellion was quickly disposed of and if she had felt threatened by Mary, then she would have imprisoned her or at least made a move toward stopping her create more plots against her. Cather's Death Comes for the Archbishop - A Narrative As I was gathering information on the World Wide Web for my discussion for class, I encountered snippets of the debate as to the classification of Cather's Death Comes for the Archbishop. Having "thumbed through" a few arguments and some reader responses to her books and having read the work, I have come to a safe conclusion: If Cather would like her book remembered as a narrative, then we should respect her wishes and let it lie at that. The reason? It's not a novel. At least not a good one. Cather can write and what she did in DCA proves her talent. Her descriptions are intriguing and she can paint a wonderful landscape with words that any reader can feel completely encompassed in. Her characters are solid; you love them or hate them and you have a number of reasons to defend your position. All the bits and pieces of DCA are sound. No, the problem is not with her technical style so much as her overall composition. There's no plot. What Cather has essentially given us is a collection of anecdotes about a couple of Catholic priests spreading religion in newly acquired plots of American soil. It's true that by the end of the book, the stories ebb themselves together and remarkably even make a strong impression, however, the last quarter of a book is not the strongest locus to begin a plot. The reader would like a reason or even a clue or mild suggestion as to what the book is going to be about by the time he is half way through it. I was pretty sure it had something to do with those mules as they seemed to work themselves back into the story a number of times. (I was quite positive of this when the one time Father Latour decided not to take his pearl-colored mule on an emergency trip and instead opted for the larger army mule, it died in the snowstorm, thus saving noble Angelica.) Alas, it wasn't about the mules. One loose definition of a narrative is simply the telling of a series of events.

â€Å"The Rocking Horse Winner† In the short story, â€Å"The Rocking-Horse Winner,† D. H. Lawrence portrays the main character, Paul, as someone who adopts an abnormal behavioral quirk and takes it to the ultimate extreme. He is the young son of a poor family in England whose members equate luck with money and money with love, consequently Paul has a distorted perception of what is required to be considered successful and also how to find affection. Much of Paul’s perception and consequent behavior can be attributed to his mother, who is a self absorbed spendthrift. Her general coldness and lack of interest imparts in Paul a desperation to find a way to provide her with the money she so obviously desires. He exhibits a great mount of luck in naming winning horses, which he attributes to his superstitious behavior. This abnormal behavior so consumes Paul that it leads to the end of his life in a failed attempt to gain his mother’s love. His mother attributes the family’s lack of money to their tendency to be unlucky – his father is unlucky at making money and she is unlucky for marrying him – rather than recognizing it is her own spendthrift ways which have put the family in their financial crisis. Paul asserts that he, however, is lucky because God, speaking to him through his rocking horse, has told him so. He attempts to prove this to his mother but feels he must keep his superstitious behavior of riding the rocking horse to determine horse race winners strictly confidential, fearing his mother will make him stop if she learns he is gambling. Only the boy’s uncle and the family gardener are aware that Paul is posting bets on horse races and he exhorts their help in setting up a fund for his mother’s disposal. This, he feels, will surely make her love him. Instead, she answers his question about her birthday present of unexpected money with a â€Å"voice cold and hard and absent† (Lawrence, page#). The money gets spent and Paul sees the fruits of his efforts throughout the house in the form of new furnishings and luxurious items. But still it is not enough. After Paul experiences the thrill of winning thousands of pounds by using the rocking horse as his guide, he then sets the impossible expectation for himself of keeping that luck flowing. He is unable to stop gambling, however, once started, and the thought of placing winning bets and continuing to make more money becomes the consuming factor in his life. His health begins to deteriorate and the voices in the house, rather than be appeased by the sudden availability of funds, increase in intensity, â€Å"like a chorus of frogs on a spring evening† (Lawrence, page#). Paul’s determination and anxiety at leaving the house, and his rocking horse, dictate his refusal to take the seaside holiday his mother has prescribed. He opts, instead, to mount his rocking horse one last time and stay upon its back until he receives the name of the winning horse in the all-important upcoming Derby race. It is apparent that Paul is not really determined to find, or keep, his luck, or to make more money, but instead is determined to do something which will make his mother exhibit love for him. Her attitude is such that she feels her children â€Å"had been thrust upon her and she could not love them† (Lawrence, page#). The existence of her children has created such apprehension that she strives to make up for this lack of love by being overly gentle with them and all the while her anxiety merely increases. Along with this anxiety regarding her emotionless relationship with her children is an additional concern – that of never having enough money to pay for all the things she wishes to buy. Because she dwells so often on her lack of financial resources, Paul’s mother has imbued in the boy the inclination to equate money with love. Consequently, Paul imagines that if only he can give his mother more money she will be able to demonstrate the love for him he so desperately craves. With enough money, Paul feels the house may finally stop it’s whispering, that the family’s creditors will be appeased, and that his mother will finally be happy. This, he imagines, would be the perfect birthday present for his mother. Paul sets a goal for himself of earning enough money from gambling to allow him to unequivocally buy his mother’s love. Unfortunately, Paul’s motivation becomes skewed and eventually forces him to go beyond merely making money for his mother; gambling becomes a compulsion, an obsession. His abnormal behavior becomes more than disturbing; in fact it develops into a self-destructive energy. It is no longer good enough to give his mother a lump sum of five thousand pounds for her birthday; he feels obligated, instead, to give her all that he has earned. His first inclination, to make the rest of his mother’s life worry-free by providing enough money that even she will be unable to spend it all in a short amount of time, soon begins to have additional, adverse effects. Paul’s plan backfires and â€Å"the voices in the house† suddenly go crazy â€Å"like a chorus of frogs on a spring evening† (Lawrence, page#). Paul’s luck seems to be running out and he goes into a frenzy when he finds himself unable to predict the next race’s winner. The boy feels he must push himself, and the rocking horse, harder and harder, faster and faster, until the name of the winning horse is revealed. In a frenzy now, Paul refuses to stop rocking the horse and he eventually does come up with a winning horse, Malabar, but it is his last opportunity to gamble. Paul falls sick and becomes unconscious. Before he dies, he tells his mother, â€Å"Mother, did I ever tell you? I am lucky! † (Lawrence, page#). Paul’s final hope, then, is that his mother will believe in his luck and show him some affection for proving this. The combination of Paul’s incredible determination, his hunger for his mother’s love and his resultant abnormal behavior are portrayed through third person narrative in D. H. Lawrence’s â€Å"The Rocking Horse Winner†. The story affords an eerie depiction of the effect greed, along with a lack of genuine emotion, can have on a family. It also touches on the compulsive behavior of addictive gamblers and how debilitating a removal from the reality of life can be, as said by Paul’s uncle, â€Å"†¦poor devil, he’s best gone out a life where he rides his rocking horse to find a winner† (Lawrence, page#). But all of these negative aspects can be attributed originally to the manner in which the mother raised her children – to worship money and to not expect love and affection. If Paul’s mother had not been so possessed by greed, the tragic consequence of her son’s gambling addiction and subsequent death may never have occurred. When greed for money is used to replace love, tragedy is the end result.

Anthem By Ayn Rand Imagine a world where the individual has been repressed to the point that the word "I" no longer exists. Now, as hellish as that sounds, imagine that you are the only one who has the capability to break free from the iron fists that are choking you and your brothers. This is the life of Equality 7-2521, the principal character and narrator of Ayn Rand's Anthem. Anthem takes place in the dark ages of the future, in a totally collectivized world. This culture has regressed to conditions reminiscent of Ancient Greece and the European Dark Ages. In the midst of fear and subordination, one man stands alone. Equality 7-2521 is not like his brothers. He is able think, create and defy. This makes him extremely dangerous. He holds the threat of change in his hands and his government will stop at nothing to take it from him. Equality's society represses him because they are afraid of those that threaten the established order. One major catalyst for change is intelligence. Equality displays evidence of genius at a young age. "We, Equality 7-2521, were not happy...in the Home of the Students. It was not that the learning was too hard for us. It was...too easy" (Rand 16). In Equality's society, it is evil to be different from ones brothers, let alone to be better than they are. He is taught at an early age to be ashamed of his intellectual superiority. "This is a sin, to be born with a head which is too quick" (Rand 16). This device of suppression by means of shame was used in an attempt to stifle geniuses and, hence, pacify his society's fear of change. As Equality grew, he confirmed their fears. During his lifetime he made many revelations and discoveries. His most profound breakthrough was his re-invention of electricity. "We, Equality 7-2521, have discovered a new power of nature." (Rand 54). He produced a primitive light bulb. He wanted to use his invention to better his world. To the misfortune of his society, they loathed this new power. If they had accepted his ideas Equality would have been "...the literal and figurative bringer of light" (Gladstein 43). Unfortunately for Equality, as well as his society, his discovery met violent opposition and his brothers were not able to benefit from his intelligence. Genius has historically been repressed. Geniuses of our past have been ostracized, punished, and martyred for presenting ideas that eventually bettered their societies. Equality is no different. "Equality 7-2521 is a creator and inventor in the tradition of Galileo, Edison, and Einstein" (Gladstein 27). These real-life geniuses dared to violate their society's norms and eventually their ideas were accepted. Like in Equality's fictional culture, real-life societies have tended to ignore the ideas of solitary geniuses (McDonald 2). His ideas were swept aside violently, and his society remained unchanged. Self-interest leads to the defiance of unjust restrictions. Equality's government prohibits individual action. No one is allowed to do anything on their own. "...There is no transgression blacker than to think or do alone"(Rand 11). Equality's defiance of his government's laws set him apart from his brothers. The condition of the Palace of Corrective Detention is demonstrative of the unquestioning obedience of his brothers. "It is easy to escape...there are no guards...There is no reason to have guards, for men have never defied the Councils so far as to escape from whatever place they were ordered to be" (Rand 73). Unlike his brothers, Equality had the individual strength to disobey the laws of his government. By questioning authority he took an interest in himself and was liberated. "The noblest human purpose is to pursue enlightened self-interest and only those the follow that course can emerge as...champions..." (McDonald 2). Equality's government had tried to contain him from day one. Authorities cannot control him because he has an independent mind. "...This totally collectivized society has no power [over]...the individual..."(Branden 112). His self-interest allows him to act as independently as his surroundings would permit. Although he is enlightened by his self-interest, he is never free from the shackles of guilt his society has placed upon him. No matter how freethinking Equality is, his nature is still shaped by his society (Kelly 1). However this guilt did not stop him from acting independently and constantly challenging the laws of his culture. Creativity is a main staple needed in order for change to take place. Equality has somehow been able to escape the suppression of creativity that is so deeply ingrained in his culture. Equality is not the only
